An implant is a small component in a much larger plan. The questions below are the ones that reveal how thoroughly that plan has been thought through.
1. What imaging was used to plan the position? A 3D scan allows the implant angle and depth to be planned against the bone available and the final crown position. Two-dimensional radiographs alone leave more to chance.
2. Who designs the final crown, and when? If the restoration is only considered after the implant is placed, the position may compromise the result.
3. What happens if the implant does not integrate? Integration failure is uncommon but not unheard of. A clinic should be able to describe its policy plainly.
4. What is the maintenance plan? Implants require ongoing professional care. Peri-implant disease behaves differently from gum disease around natural teeth.
5. What alternatives were considered? A bridge, a denture, or leaving the space may all be reasonable in some circumstances. If no alternative was discussed, ask why.
